Living in a state with legal fireworks is kind of annoying actually. For several weeks before and after July 4, a bunch of idiots in my neighborhood persistently set off fireworks in the street at weird hours. Hearing SCREEEEEEEEEE BLAM for the 800th time in a week gets old fast.

Right now I’ll hear about 3-4 per night, it’s really weird and especially frustrating when you’re trying to diagnose a problem with your car and can’t tell if the BOOM is a from the car or not. Super helpful.

I’m lucky to be far enough from other houses to really have it bother me, but I do have a family house on a nearby lake, and wow. Tourists who can either afford a weekly lake house rental or worse yet, who can afford to own the house, come up and spend THOUSANDS on fireworks that they will set off at random times throughout this coming weekend.

One guy and his buddy supposedly spend over $5,000 on fireworks - just the stuff you can buy at local stores - they literally fill a 200 square foot floating dock, go out in the middle of the cove, and start lighting shit. This goes on nearly continuously for over an hour. Any gaps are filled by people on the shore hoping to compete with their $500 that they spent. The best place to be is in a boat in the middle of this debacle, you can face any direction it doesn’t matter. I’ve found myself actually getting bored at times.

Or, yesterday I witnessed a couple (or at least, a male and female of roughly the same age) standing near their blacked out later-model Dodge Avenger, BOTH smoking cigarettes while the gas was pumping, and a small child was screaming in the back seat of their car with the windows down. Also, the wind was blowing directly toward the car. I almost confronted them about the whole smoking at the gas station thing, but I decided to just leave instead. I had my two little kids in the car, not worth it.

They are pretty much all like that these days, I think they mark up the base price a bit so they are still making a killing on sales. I usually drop $50-100 per year on shit that goes boom. I love my mortars and roman candles.

My neighbor a couple houses down calls them all in as gunshots any day other than the real holidays. Cops actually respond too...lots of fines doled out over the last couple years since they moved in and the neighborhood is now relatively quiet.

Hear it on the scanner all the time “Citizen at XXX YYY Drive called in with a report of gunshots behind their house. Unit please respond, be aware it’s probably fireworks"...then about half an hour later... "Unit ###, investigation complete, was fireworks and 2 citations were issued" or "was juveniles with fireworks returned them to their parent's house".

In South Carolina, I bought fireworks from the gas station before. My brother and I were doing a long midnight drive from South Florida to visit family and needed something to keep us up through the bumfuck backroads up there, so we were launching fireworks out of the sunroof. Good times.

Yeah, that was my thought I guess. I actually had my then-infant son in the car one day at a gas station when a car pulled up at the pump across from me. A girl (maybe 12?) got out of the far side and came around to pump gas. The driver (mom, presumably) opens her door to give the girl a credit card, and lights up a clove cigarette or whatever you would call it. I actually called her out for it, not quietly I might add. The lady looked at me like I had accused her of, you know, breathing. The attendant inside actually shut off the pump when she saw what was happening. Yay.

That won't happen. As long as they say "I think it might be" or "it sounded like" they're protected...no way the prosecutors could prove that statements like that are false or fictitious. I suppose they could give an order to stop reporting them then cite them for disobeying a lawful order but even that would be a hard row to hoe.

Have you been before? We went 2 years ago with our son who was 2 at the time. We took him and his now-2-year-old sister to Santa’s Village and were very impressed... once you set aside the general feeling of dread and/or general hatred of any place that forces so much interaction with The Public.

Santa’s Village is free through 3 years old, and only $31 instead of $37/ea. There’s a huge water area that looks amazing, we didn’t really explore it though. The rides are similar and the log flume is great. If you can handle the Holiday music being piped in everywhere, it’s just a theme park on the inside...

Also hit up Shilling Brewery in Littleton on the way home.

oh yes this sounds vaguely familiar. Well, it might be worth checking out Santa’s Village. Just a thought. For me personally, I find the Great Outdoors endlessly entertaining; I could do without theme parks entirely. But kids, you know. You gotta do it I guess. And it’s an easy drive for us, too.

Me and my buddy shot bottle rockets out of the sunroof of his car, it didn’t work out real well. The bottle rockets started flying back into the car and blowing up in his backseat.
